Vertical Milling of 6061 Aluminum Frame for the Optical Industry
Working with one of our customers in the optical industry, Jurman Metrics Inc. used our CNC vertical milling capabilities to machine this frame, constructed from 6061 aluminum. This piece serves an important purpose in its spectroscopy application, as it is used for light sourcing and detection and is integral to the entire process. Working on our Supermax 3 Vertical Machining Center, we carried out a number of CNC milling applications to achieve the proper dimensions, specifications and features for the frame: a mill profile process, milled windows, reaming, counterboring, drilled holes, and threading and tapping. Our facility is able to achieve tolerances as tight as ±.0005", and for certain features different tolerances were required, for instance flatness to ±.001" and parallelism to ±.002". Proper dimensions and fit for this frame were critically important, and so maintaining these tolerances while milling and machining the final dimensions of 5.375" x 4.1" x 2.25" was a main concern. Once the vertical milling process was completed, we applied a gold iridite finish to the 6061 aluminum base, and shipped the frame to our Danbury, CT customer.
